FROM NATURE TO ABSTRACT EXPRESSION
As an observer of the nuances in the natural world, I am inspired by the dynamic layering of light, texture and color found in nature.
Time spent exploring woodlands, fields, beaches and waterways, including thirty years documenting the Bermuda landscape, is how I photographically record the interplay of light in the environment and the complex relationships presented there. These photographs inform the visual cues for color and composition that are remixed in a meticulous yet fluid and spontaneous studio process.
Employing a multi-layered collage technique, the work results in an uncovering of light through an abstract expression of my initial observations. By working the image through both building and subtractive actions, layers of form and reflection appear.
Through this creative process I am able to access the ebb and flow inherent in opposite actions —
A quiet presence in the midst of polarity.
At the onset of the pandemic, we faced a new level of consciousness around polarity — and the extremes that surfaced during this time. My art practice became a mirror for how I learned to navigate life during lockdown.
The layering actions in my method represent the movement between polarities like growth vs. decay, doing vs. undoing and control vs. chance. Materials are placed down, only to be lifted up. Foundations are built, only to be broken down. Sharp lines are blurred. I am never certain of the outcome as I continue to add and remove, layer and scrape away —
The absence of certainty leads to an inspired surprise.
As I reflect on the beauty in our natural world coupled with the challenges we face during this unprecedented time, my work unfolds as an exploration into the infinite ways that light can be held in dark spaces — until revealed.
